Hanging Canopies

Floopadoon

Forests that float. Villages on rope bridges.

A dense atmosphere keeps whole forests aloft on buoyant plant bladders. Airborne villages string between drifting islands, above a chemical fog no one goes into.

Everything here floats, except Zamfyr.

Floopadoon's forests float. Giant plants grow balloon-like bladders filled with light gas, and whole islands of trees, roots and soil drift through the thick pink-green air. Rope bridges link the islands, and villages hang between them.

Below lies the fog, a heavy chemical layer that no one enters and no one has come back from. The islanders don't talk about it much. They prefer to look up.

Atmosphere

Thick, pink-green haze, soft and sweet-smelling.

Local quirk

Gravity is optional. Manners are not.

Regions · proposed names, not locked canon

Hanging Canopies

The floating forest islands.

Bridgetown

The largest village, a tangle of rope bridges between six drifting islands. Getting lost is normal. Getting found is a community effort.

The Fog Line

The edge of the deadly fog. Islands that drift too low are pulled back up with long ropes and a lot of shouting.

Hazards

  • ▲Chemical fogA heavy, deadly layer below the islands. Nobody goes in.
  • ▲Islands drifting apartBridges stretch and snap. Watch your step mid-crossing.

Visitor tips

  • ✦Hold the rope. Always hold the rope.
  • ✦Don't look down. Well, look down a little.
  • ✦Be kind to the rabbits.

Local life

  • ●Sky villagers
  • ●Puffball rabbits

A day on Floopadoon

Mornings are soft and pink. Islands drift slowly past each other, and neighbours throw breakfast across the gap.

Afternoons are for bridge repairs, singing and catching puffball rabbits that float off the edge.

Locals & customs

Phaffling home towns

Homeworld of the Phafflings, with tethered furniture and floating canopy towns. Boofzilla is not welcome.

Bridge-Elder Wimsy

Has tied every knot in Bridgetown. Can tell what island you're on by the creak of the rope.

Puffball rabbits

Fluffy rabbits that float when they're happy. Catch them gently. They're everyone's favourite.

  • ◆You never cut a rope without asking three neighbours.
  • ◆When two islands drift together, the villages hold a 'meeting party'.
  • ◆Children learn to tie knots before they learn to walk.

Legends & history

The Sunken Island

Long ago, the stories say, the biggest island sank into the fog, carrying a whole village with it.

On quiet nights, islanders swear they hear singing from below, and it sounds happy.

Crew log

“Everything floats here. I don't. I've checked. Several times.”

Captain Zamfyr

“Good knots. I learned three new ones.”

Something in the Air Filter

An invasive air-filter spore hitches a ride to Earth and starts turning gardens pink.

The spore isn't just turning gardens pink. It's making Earth plants grow tiny floating bladders, and the first garden is starting to lift off.

Earthward stakes

One spore could change Earth's air quality, and the colour of everything.

Science inspiration

Atmospheric buoyancy is real physics. Inhabited floating forests are fiction.
