The Klapati
A six-armed people whose entire language of manners is clapping. Two claps is hello. Two different claps is war.
ConfirmedTo outsiders, Klapati society looks like a permanent standing ovation. In fact, clapping is a sophisticated language: the number of hands, the rhythm and the position of the arms can mean agreement, insult, warning, rank, a dinner invitation or a marriage proposal.
Klapati etiquette is famously hard to learn, which makes every negotiation with them a minefield of accidental applause.
01
A language of applause
Klapati communicate through clapping, rhythmic gestures and coordinated applause. Which hands you use, how fast and how often can turn a greeting into an insult, or a dinner invitation into a formal challenge.
Two claps, top hands: hello. Two claps, bottom hands: we're done here.
02
Negotiating with six hands
Zamfyr once tried to sign a trade deal with a Klapati official and accidentally made one of the rudest gestures in their language. Quincy spotted it immediately. Onobo tried to help by clapping along, which made it worse, and then somehow better.
Signature gag: a whole room of Klapati bursts into applause, and Zamfyr has no idea whether he's a hero or in serious trouble.
03
Klapati and Quincy
Quincy reads Klapati rhythm like a book, which makes him the crew's most valuable member whenever applause breaks out. He keeps a pocket guide. Zamfyr refuses to read it.
