Solar System · the windy edge

Neptune

The fastest winds in the Solar System and a moon that spits ice.

Neptune is deep blue, freezing and the windiest planet we know, with storms that race faster than sound. It is the last giant before the dark edge of the Solar System.

Its big moon Triton orbits backwards and blows icy geysers. The frontier outpost there is the Solar System's last stop before deep space, full of tough crews and bad coffee.

Triton Outpost was built to watch the edge of the system. Its crews are known for being tough, practical and brilliant at fixing things with whatever is lying around.

Atmosphere

Cobalt blue, streaked with white storms; Triton's geysers glittering in the dark.

Local quirk

Outpost coffee is brewed with geyser ice. It tastes faintly of disappointment.

Regions · proposed names, not locked canon

Triton Outpost

A frontier base among the geysers of Neptune's backwards-orbiting moon.

The Dark Spots

Storms that appear and vanish on Neptune, big enough to swallow Earth.

Edge Beacon

The last navigation beacon before the Kuiper Belt.

Hazards

  • ▲Supersonic windsNeptune's winds are the fastest in the Solar System.
  • ▲Extreme coldTriton is one of the coldest places we know.
  • ▲Ice geysersPlumes of icy gas that can knock over a lander.

Visitor tips

  • ✦Never stand over a geyser vent.
  • ✦Bring your own coffee.
  • ✦Sign the Beacon wall.

Local life

  • ●Outpost crews
  • ●Comet trackers

A day on Neptune

Geysers go off across the plains every few hours, throwing ice high into the thin air.

The canteen is the warmest room in the outpost, so everyone lives there.

Locals & customs

Station Boss Rhea Okoro

Runs Triton Outpost. Fixes everything with tape and a stern look.

Wick

A comet tracker who spots trouble days before the instruments do.

  • ◆Every crew signs the Beacon wall before heading into deep space.
  • ◆The first geyser of the shift gets a cheer.

Legends & history

The Backwards Moon

Triton orbits backwards, and crews joke that it's trying to go home.

Some think it was captured long ago, a wanderer from the edge that never left.

Crew log

“Quaint little outpost. Terrible coffee. I'll take two.”

Captain Zamfyr

“Coffee is bad. Beacon is worse.”

Last Stop

The Edge Beacon goes dark, and every ship coming in from deep space is suddenly flying blind toward the inner planets.

The beacon was switched off from inside the outpost. One of Rhea's own crew is not who they say they are.

Earthward stakes

The Edge Beacon guides traffic safely past the outer planets on its way toward Earth.

Science inspiration

Neptune and Triton are real: Neptune has extreme winds and Triton has geysers and a backwards orbit. The outpost is fiction.
